Design Concept:The regional office building is located in one of the hottest regions of Punjab. Therefore, the concept was derived from angular studies of the sun. The building is oriented in a way that it opens towards the west, in an attempt to discourage the south sun. A generic cuboid would have resulted in an increased heat gain, hence cascades were proposed.
Solar Photovoltaic panels were installed in the front façade in order to make maximum use of the sunlight.
An atrium designed in the center of the building performs the function of a central courtyard and helps in achieving the “stack and venturi effect” within the building, while also ensuringsufficient amount of sunlight in the building. On the other hand, the cascading and frontal taper keep away the afternoon sunrays and reflect them into the earth despite the western facing. This design detail not only adds to the interest of the form but also helps in attaining a comfortable temperature indoors.
Ample vegetation and landscaping also helps in ensuring a habitable climate. Tree plantations and water bodies control the micro climate of the site.
